Below is a general overview of what has been lost including the estimated value.
The total estimated damage amounts to approximately € 239,500
2 ha mixed natural forest
Ecologically of great value due to the diversity of species, especially in contrast to the monoculture of eucalyptus in this region, grown for industrial purposes. Species of trees included, amongst many others mimosa, holm oak, chestnut, cork oak, pine, oak, strawberry tree, birch and beech. The goats grazed on the semi-open spaces in the forest and nibbled everything they encountered. We ourselves used our forest to meet our own needs for firewood and lumber, but there was no further exploitation.
Estimated value € 15,000
0.5 ha of agricultural land
Spread over terraces. Consisting of two irrigated vegetable gardens with amongst others cabbage, tomatoes, peppers, squash, garter, beans, lettuce, soft fruit etc. and orchards with olive, apple, plum and orange trees and with vines.
Close to the house was a herb garden with all possible culinary herbs such as thyme, rosemary, rue, mint, lovage, sage, lemon balm, parsley and chives. Also in the immediate vicinity of the house was a large number of fruit trees: orange, plum, olive, almond, lemon, walnut, apricot, peach, apple, pear, naxi (apple / pear cross), hazelnut and vines.
Estimated value € 6,000
0.5 ha of rough ground
Rugged and steep terrain with lots of rock, broom, heath and “Carqueija” typical of the Iberian peninsula, a low shrub with yellow flowers which can be used for, among other things, drawing tea.
Estimated value € 500

The wooden lohinja – the swapshop – has incomprehensibly been spared .
3-room house with natural stone staircase to the topfloor, open kitchen with original traditional wood oven and separate storage room. (That “open” of the kitchen was in the literal sense, without a wall on the eastern side. Only the sink was protected from the wind by a glass panel.) The simple bathroom was miraculously spared. In the house were all our personal belongings (books, computers, musical instruments, art, furniture etc.). In addition, we had an extensive range of tools related to the processing of our agricultural harvest and the preparation of food, including a corker, a crown corker, a grain mill, a tobacco cutter, various large bottles, 100 basket bottles, a meat grinder, a juice kettle, a collection of more than 150 different herbs and spices, mortars and the cookbook with ‘secret’ recipes compiled by Peter over the years.
Estimated value € 130,000
